Summary

Union Middle is a top-ranked public middle school serving 1,068 students in grades 6-8 in San Jose, part of the high-performing Union Elementary school district.

The school consistently achieves exceptional academic results, with over 80% of students proficient in English, Math, and Science, placing it in the top 2% of all California middle schools. It significantly outperforms many nearby schools like Willow Glen Middle and Moreland Middle. Union Middle also excels at supporting all students, with its English Language Learners and students receiving special education services ranking in the state's 99th and 97th percentiles, respectively. Furthermore, student attendance is remarkably high, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.9%, far below the state average.

An interesting finding is that Union Middle achieves these outstanding outcomes efficiently, spending less per student than some comparable schools like Redwood Middle in Saratoga. It also demonstrated resilience during the pandemic, with minimal learning loss. The school's performance is part of a cluster of high-achieving schools in the area, including Raymond J. Fisher Middle in Los Gatos, though it stands out even within its own district compared to Dartmouth Middle.

Open Quote The school tried to put an new intern in charge of an advanced subject with no supervision. The result was a disaster and the school did nothing to help the kids, because of politics. My advice to parents is to get involved early and often, and I wish I had moved my child to a different class. Close Quote
