Summary

Schallenberger Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 509 students in the San Jose Unified district, consistently performing above average as a solid, 4-star school in its community.

Academically, Schallenberger outperforms both district and state averages in English, Math, and Science, and it has maintained this strong 4-star rating with notable stability over the past decade. The school manages chronic student absenteeism (15.7%) much better than most district peers, which is a significant strength. While it delivers reliable quality, an important area for growth is ensuring equally strong outcomes for all student subgroups, as performance varies. The school has shown good resilience in recovering its test scores and attendance after the pandemic.

In the broader local landscape, Schallenberger occupies a reliable middle tier. It doesn't reach the elite performance levels of nearby schools like Booksin Elementary or Bagby Elementary, but it significantly outperforms other neighborhood schools like Ernesto Galarza Elementary and Terrell Elementary. Compared to a similar-performing charter like Sartorette Charter, Schallenberger achieves its results with higher per-student spending. Overall, it represents a consistently good option in an area with highly varied school performance.

Open Quote With the addition of Principle Chamberlin, the school has become a much brighter place. We started with the previous Principle who just appeared to be going through the motions until retirement. The school feels rejuvinated and refreshed all thanks to the new principle. Loving it now. Just wish class sizes where a tad smaller but that appears to be the norm in most public schools these days. Close Quote
