Summary

Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High is a small, specialized public high school serving 156 students in grades 9-12 within the Sacramento City Unified district, focusing on preparing students for careers in healthcare.

The school presents a mixed academic profile with a significant strength in English, where its proficiency rate notably exceeds both district and state averages, but it faces considerable challenges in mathematics and science. Despite these academic struggles in core subjects, the school excels at keeping students on track to graduate, boasting a very high graduation rate and a 0% dropout rate, even while grappling with a high rate of chronic student absenteeism. It operates with more individualized attention due to a low student-teacher ratio and has the highest per-student spending among the compared local schools, including Umoja International Academy and The MET.

When compared to other specialized schools in the area, such as the top-performing Washington Middle College High and Umoja International Academy, Arthur A. Benjamin has similar resources and a career-focused model but has not yet achieved the same level of consistent academic results, particularly in science which is central to its health professions theme. The school's statewide ranking has also been volatile in recent years, and while it graduates nearly all of its students, aligning its science and math instruction with its health-focused mission appears to be a key opportunity for improvement.

Open Quote Limited classes- my kid is in an English class here and hasn't written a single essay...WTF? No electives either- I am sending my daughter to a better school next year. The principal is a fake chump and keeps lying to me about how good this school is. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is a joke...NO electives...NO sports teams...all the kids learn is math and science (barely)...the curriculum is too narrowly focused. Oh- and several of the teachers this year don't even have full teaching credentials. Not just a poor school, but a bit of a joke. A place for the "different" kids that can't seem to hack the more advanced curriculum of larger high schools. If your kid is a bit slow, this is the place for them. Close Quote
