Summary

Manzanita SEED Elementary is a public K-5 school in the Oakland Unified district, serving 436 students in a high-need area where over 80% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While its overall state ranking is in the 35th percentile, the school stands out for significantly outperforming other neighborhood schools with similar student demographics, such as Fruitvale Elementary and Manzanita Community Elementary, in core subjects like English and math. It has also made exceptional progress, reducing chronic student absenteeism by over 40 percentage points in two years to a rate better than the district average. Interestingly, performance varies greatly by grade, with 4th graders excelling while 5th graders struggle, suggesting the school is navigating some transition challenges.

The school's context reveals important insights about education in Oakland. For instance, two schools—Manzanita SEED Elementary and Manzanita Community Elementary—operate at the exact same address with vastly different results, showing that factors like leadership and culture matter greatly. Higher-performing schools like Glenview Elementary and Sequoia Elementary are nearby, but they serve communities with different needs. The analysis also shows that higher per-student spending at some schools does not automatically lead to better academic outcomes.

Open Quote This small school has an excellent dual immersion program and expeditionary learning model that makes learning fun and engaging. This school has a very dedicated administrative staff and faculty. My daughter finished kindergarten there last year and was reading and writing in both English and Spanish by the end of the school year. She scored above average on all of her kindergarten assessments. Manzanita SEED also has a fabulous after school program that offers students academic support and high quality arts enrichment activities. My daughter participated in the choir, drama class and meditation class after school, and loved them all. I am very pleased with this school. Close Quote
