Summary

Garfield Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 454 students in the Oakland Unified district, ranking in the bottom 4% of California elementary schools and serving a student population where nearly every child qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency rates in English (12.62%) and math (17.21%) that are among the lowest in the immediate area, similar to other struggling neighborhood schools like Manzanita Community Elementary and International Community Elementary. A notable point of comparison is that several nearby charter schools, such as Lazear Charter Academy and Achieve Academy, achieve better academic results and have much lower chronic absenteeism, despite operating with substantially less funding per student.

While Garfield's high chronic absenteeism rate of 31.8% shows recent improvement, it remains a major concern and is higher than the district and state averages. The school spends over $26,000 per student, which is more than most comparison schools, yet outcomes have declined over the past decade. Performance varies widely among different groups of students, with particularly low scores for English Learners and students in special education, indicating a need for more targeted support.
