Summary

August Boeger Middle is a public middle school serving about 400 students in grades 6-8 in San Jose, operating within the Mount Pleasant Elementary district, which is one of the lower-performing districts in the state.

The school's overall academic performance is below state averages, ranking in the 29th percentile, but it shows a significant strength in its program for English Language Learners, which ranks in the top quartile statewide. This success contrasts with the school's challenges in other areas, such as mathematics and supporting students with special needs. Notably, student performance in English Language Arts improves consistently from 6th to 8th grade, suggesting positive academic growth during their time at the school. A concerning trend is the high rate of chronic student absences, at 23.6%, which is above both district and state averages and is often correlated with lower academic achievement.

When compared to nearby schools, August Boeger presents some interesting contrasts. It spends significantly more per student ($24,732) than some higher-performing schools like Quimby Oak Middle and George V. LeyVa Intermediate, yet achieves more modest results. The school's performance sits in the middle of a wide range found in the area, with schools like KIPP Heartwood Academy ranking very high and Joseph George Middle ranking very low, all within a few miles of each other.

Open Quote Bad leadership, parents are snubbed by administration, no communication, a lot of their decisions do not make sense. They also have put up a cell tower inside the school/district grounds which may not be in the health interests of the kids. Not sure if it was properly approved and an EIA study done prior to the decision being taken. Close Quote

Open Quote The change in administration at this school 3 years ago was for the worse.

The philosophy of this school is that parental involvement is neither needed nor required. Junior High kids are unique and parents should not participate in activities. This is why honors student recognitions take place when parents are unable to attend - in the middle of the day.

Communication for the administration is virtually none.

Starting in 2010/11, there will be no electives offered. The district claims that it is because of the budget crisis.

In the 2008/09 school year, the budget study committee overwhelmingly recommended closing Ida Jew which would have resulted in a savings of $1,500,000. Instead, the board decided to keep the school open (presently under enrolled) and the superintendent kicked out all of the inter-district transfers because he has upset with them for involving the media in trying to keep the school open. This resulted in the loss of $500,000.

In summary, the poor stewardship of the Mount Pleasant Elementary School District resulted in a loss of $2,000,000 to the district. The district also layed off teachers but not a single district office employee was let go. They were all moved to positions funded by monies that could not be touched. Close Quote
