Summary

Grace M. Davis High is a large public high school serving grades 9-12 to over 2,000 students in the Modesto City High district, which faces academic challenges across the board.

The school's academic performance, particularly in mathematics where only about 12% of students are proficient, is significantly below state averages and is the lowest among comparable traditional high schools in the district, such as James C. Enochs High and Fred C. Beyer High. This occurs alongside a high rate of chronic student absenteeism. However, the school has shown notable strengths in recent years, including a graduation rate above 95% and an exceptionally low dropout rate, creating a complex picture of its effectiveness.

Performance varies dramatically for different groups of students at the school, with some subgroups performing far below state averages. While the school serves a community with high economic need, other schools in the district with similar profiles, like Joseph A. Gregori High, achieve stronger academic results, suggesting factors beyond demographics are at play. Compared to alternative options like the Robert Elliott Alternative Education Center, Grace M. Davis High provides a more stable environment for its students.

Open Quote Grace M. Davis was a good school to attend when I went there in the 1960s. The whole Modesto City Schools board is an atrocity. Punishments never fit the "crime" and I would not ever recommend Grace M. Davis, nor any other Modesto City School to anyone asking about it. If I could have voted a negative, I would have.
