Summary

Carthay Elementary Of Environmental Studies Magnet is a public K-5 magnet school with about 327 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, offering a specialized environmental studies program.

This school stands out for its strong academic results, especially considering that a significant portion of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. It consistently outperforms both the district and state averages in English, math, and science. The school has shown impressive, steady improvement over the last decade and is particularly effective in supporting its students, with African American and Hispanic student subgroups achieving very high statewide rankings. Compared to nearby schools like Crescent Heights Boulevard Elementary or Shenandoah Street Elementary, which have similar or higher poverty rates, Carthay achieves notably higher proficiency rates. It also delivers these results cost-effectively, spending significantly less per student than several neighboring schools with lower performance.

While Carthay is a strong performer, it faces challenges like a chronic absenteeism rate that is higher than the state average. Performance also varies by grade, with a dip in fourth-grade scores. When compared to the highest-performing schools in the area, such as Canfield Avenue Elementary or Horace Mann Elementary in Beverly Hills Unified, those schools serve more affluent communities. Overall, Carthay's environmental magnet program and its trajectory of success make it a compelling option for families seeking a quality, theme-based education within LA Unified.

Open Quote Carthay Center Elementary School is a wonderful school beyond what the test scores show. There are many low income students and English language learners, who tend to score lower on standardized tests, but our daughters are receiving a wonderful education and score regularly over the 90th percentile, so the teaching at the school is great. We are all very excited that beginning in Fall 2014 the school becomes a Magnet school focusing on Environmental Studies. The school has an amazing garden, and students have the opportunity to learn hands-on about biology, ecology, etc. with the Garden Science program, funded by the PTA and delivered by STAR Education. The PTA also sponsors weekly Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) classes for students identified as gifted or talented, a Writer's Workshop program, a California Dance Institute program, and so much more. There is a free after school program available, also by STAR Education, which provides PE, math and literacy learning opportunities, and extra-curriculars such as art, wood-working, gymnastics, etc. Our daughters love the school, they love going to school, they are thriving. It is a great school. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has been attending Carthay since Pre-K. In September He will be entering the 5th grade. His teachers have been phenomenal and he has enjoyed them and the school immensely. If more parents became involved with the school and had more dialogue with their children's teachers this school could become truly outstanding. Close Quote
