Summary

Margaret Landell Elementary is a top-performing K-6 public school serving 662 students in the Cypress Elementary district, consistently ranking in the top 2-3% of all California elementary schools.

The school stands out for its exceptional and consistent academic results, with over 86% of students proficient in English and 81% in math, far exceeding both district and state averages. What makes Margaret Landell Elementary particularly remarkable is its success across all student groups and its incredibly low chronic absenteeism rate of just 3.9%, which is less than half the district average. This performance is even more notable when compared to nearby schools; for example, it outperforms A. E. Arnold Elementary—located just 0.4 miles away in the same district—by over 30 percentage points in English proficiency.

Margaret Landell achieves this excellence efficiently, spending less per student than several district peers like Clara J. King Elementary. While other high-performing schools like Newcomb Academy in the Long Beach Unified district are nearby, Margaret Landell maintains a strong advantage, especially in science. The school's stable, decade-long record of 5-star ratings demonstrates a sustained culture of high achievement that distinguishes it within the community.

Open Quote This school has excellent teachers and a new caring Principal who keeps parents well-informed. The teachers expect a lot and there is a lot of homework, but my daughter has excelled at this school with its advanced curriculum. My 3rd grade daughter, required to read for 30 minutes a day, now reads at the 6th grade level. Her writing has improved dramatically. She aces most math tests and the teachers drill her twice a week on addition facts, allowing only a minute and a half to do 30 addition problems. My 2nd daughter, who just finished Kindergarten, was already expected to do research on Ocean Animals and then make an oral presentation. She needs extra assistance on math, but the caring teachers are willing to go out of their way to help. The school is on top of the latest learning systems such as Common Core, Reading Counts/Lexile Scoring, and Thinking Maps. The Principal offers educational classes to parents to help them understand the new tools and assist their children in maximizing the tools' effectiveness. The student pickup/dropoff has improved and security at the campus has improved with the installation of fences and better control of entrances. Close Quote

The school is the best elementary school in the district and near Oxford Academy, one of the most difficult high schools to get into in the country. Landell puts special emphasis on writing skills and that will help students who want to get into Oxford Academy, which looks for excellent writers. Although the receptionist may be rude to you if you don't pick up your kids on time, she is well-organized and is on top of things. Close Quote
