Summary

Maryland Elementary School is a public school serving grades PK-8 in the Washington Elementary School District in Phoenix, Arizona. The school has 583 students and is located in a low-income area, with 82.67% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite receiving higher per-student funding ($9,651 in 2021-2022) compared to the state average, Maryland Elementary School consistently underperforms on standardized tests, with only 24-30% of students proficient in English Language Arts and 16-20% proficient in Mathematics, significantly lower than the state averages. The school also has relatively high dropout rates, ranging from 3.1% to 6.1% over the past few years. While the school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of minority students, their academic performance generally lags behind their peers at the state level.

Interestingly, the nearby Orangewood School, which is also part of the Washington Elementary School District, performs slightly better than Maryland Elementary School on standardized tests, but still lags behind state averages. In contrast, Alhambra Traditional School, which is part of a different district, the Alhambra Elementary District, consistently outperforms the state and district averages, suggesting that factors beyond just district affiliation may be at play.

Open Quote It's unfortunate that in just a few weeks of having our kids start our neighborhood school, that my family has to start looking for other options such as Alhambra Charter School just down the road. The zero tolerance bullying policy truly doesn't exist and guards are forced into the classrooms to assist teachers with order. Kids, that repeatedly impeded progress and learning, that go to the principals office, are allowed to continue. Worst of all, repeated bullying including shoving kids to the ground and threats of fighting don't warrant action, just phone calls from social workers. I hope to update this post but I'm afraid our attempts to work with the administration is falling on helpless ears. Pictures of the latest action of a bully after throwing my kid to the ground.
