Summary:
Zip code 83116 has three schools serving 637 students: Canyon Elementary School (grades K–6), Kemmerer Junior Senior High School (grades 7–12), and New Frontier High School (grades 7–12), all in Lincoln County School District #1. In 2025–2026, the reported results at Canyon and Kemmerer show English language arts (ELA) closer to state levels than math or science: across their reported grades, ELA averages 54.7% proficient versus 57.3% statewide, math 44.9% versus 55.0%, and science 39.3% versus 52.5%. The clearest area-wide academic concern is proficiency in math and especially science, where results are further below the state.
Neither school leads in every subject, but both have notable ELA bright spots: Canyon’s sixth-grade ELA proficiency was 63.2%, 2.4 percentage points above the state, while Kemmerer’s ninth-grade ELA was 60.0%, 4.4 points above. The largest current gaps include Canyon fourth-grade math at 42.6% versus 62.6% statewide, and Kemmerer eighth-grade math at 35.2% versus 53.9%; Kemmerer science was also low, at 32.4% in grade eight and 36.5% in grade ten. In the comparable 2024–2025 tenth-grade results, New Frontier scored 33.3% in both math and science, below Kemmerer’s 48.2% and 46.4%, respectively, and below state results. Kemmerer stands out positively on graduation: its 2024–2025 rate was 92.1%, compared with 83.1% statewide; New Frontier’s was 83.3%.
Results fell at both schools with usable year-to-year scores: Canyon’s average ELA and math proficiency across grades 3–6 dropped 4.1 and 5.8 points, while Kemmerer’s ELA, math, and science averages across its reported grades dropped 10.1, 7.8, and 11.3 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings also declined: Canyon went from the 76th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 29th in 2025–2026, and Kemmerer from the 92nd to the 33rd; New Frontier was at the 17th percentile in 2024–2025. School size and student–teacher ratios differ considerably: New Frontier has 18 students and a 9.0 ratio, compared with 331 and 13.6 at Canyon and 288 and 15.6 at Kemmerer. Its 2022–2023 free/reduced-lunch eligible share was also higher, at 35.7%, versus 21.9% at Canyon and 18.6% at Kemmerer; these figures are context, not explanations of results. New Frontier’s 2025–2026 scores are suppressed, and differing grade spans mean the schools cannot be ranked fairly using all-grade scores.
