Crook County School District #1 has five schools serving 1,203 students: two elementary schools, two schools serving grades 7–12, and an alternative school serving kindergarten through grade 12. Across reported 2025–2026 results, the schools’ equal-weighted averages were above state averages in ELA, math, and science, by 8.8, 10.9, and 9.6 percentage points, respectively. Those averages mask sharp differences by grade and school: the most important takeaway is that strong area-wide results do not mean every student will encounter the same outcomes.

Sundance Elementary and Sundance Secondary School are the clearest overall standouts. Sundance Elementary leads ELA in grades 4–6 and math in grades 3–6, including 93.8% in fifth-grade math, 32.8 points above the state; SchoolDigger ranks it 12th of 148 schools and gives it five stars. Sundance Secondary leads ELA in grades 7, 9, and 10 and math in grades 7 and 9; SchoolDigger ranks it 5th of 81 with five stars. Its notable exception is eighth-grade math at 43.3%, below the state and 31.7 points behind Hulett School. Hulett’s results are especially uneven: it leads eighth-grade ELA and eighth- and tenth-grade math, yet its seventh-grade ELA is 30.8%, 25.7 points below the state and 54.5 points behind Sundance Secondary. Moorcroft Elementary is often at the lower end in elementary ELA, while Moorcroft Secondary School’s stronger result is ninth-grade math at 63.6%, 17.1 points above the state.

Compared with 2024–2025, the schools’ advantage over the state narrowed by about 2.1 points across matched results, mainly in math; individual changes varied, including a 51.6-point drop in Hulett’s seventh-grade ELA and a 26.1-point drop in Sundance Secondary’s eighth-grade math. Graduation outcomes add another distinction: Sundance Secondary reports 90.3% and Moorcroft Secondary 88.9%, both above the 83.1% state rate, while Hulett reports 73.3%. The Sundance schools also have lower reported free/reduced-lunch eligibility shares—25.6% at Sundance Elementary and 24.8% at Sundance Secondary—than Moorcroft Elementary (60.1%); these are contextual observations, not explanations of results. Hulett is the smallest school, with 168 students, and has a student-teacher ratio of 8.7, compared with 11.4 at Sundance Elementary. Results can vary considerably by grade, particularly in smaller cohorts.
