Summary

Van Devender Middle School is a public middle school in Parkersburg, West Virginia, serving 286 students in grades 6-8. It is part of the Wood County Schools district, which is ranked 6th out of 55 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the district's strong performance, Van Devender Middle School consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates in math ranged from 15.9% to 25.4%, while the district and state averages were significantly higher. The school also struggles to support certain student subgroups, with rankings for African American, Hispanic, and multi-racial students among the lowest in the state. However, the school performs relatively well in supporting special education and English language learner students.

Van Devender Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom third of West Virginia middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. This is in stark contrast to the high-performing Jackson Middle School and Edison Middle School, which are also part of the Wood County Schools district. Despite its low student-teacher ratio, Van Devender Middle School's academic performance has been declining over the years, suggesting the need for effective interventions to improve student learning.

Open Quote I wouldn't even rate this school a 1, they allow bullying, they themselves harass the children. I didn't have 1 week of peace at this school, if you can get your child transferred, then I would do it now!! This school needs shut down, especially if you have a child with adhd, they treat them as an outcast, if your child does anything, they are all over them, but as soon as someone does something(even worse)to your child, nothing is done!!
