Summary

Madison Elementary School in Parkersburg, WV, is a mid-sized school serving 264 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Wood County Schools district. After years of strong performance that earned it top ratings, the school has experienced a sudden and dramatic decline in the most recent school year, dropping to a 1-star rating and ranking 301st out of 355 elementary schools in West Virginia.

This sharp downturn is particularly concerning because it happened in just one year—the school was performing at the 67th percentile as recently as the previous school year. The decline is most pronounced among specific groups of students, including boys, students receiving special education services, and those from low-income households, all of whom saw their performance drop by 30 to 40 percentile points. The contrast with nearby schools is striking: Criss Elementary, just over a mile away, ranks in the 98th percentile with proficiency rates around 80% in both math and reading, while Greenmont Elementary and Gihon Elementary also rank in the top quarter of schools statewide. Even Emerson Elementary, less than half a mile away, ranks higher at the 46th percentile.

Current proficiency rates at Madison (39% in math and 38% in English language arts) fall well below district averages of 47% and 53%, respectively. Science proficiency has been a persistent weakness, with only 22% of 5th graders meeting standards. The school's per-student spending of $12,729 is comparable to higher-performing peers, suggesting the issue isn't funding but rather instructional effectiveness or support systems. The one bright spot is 5th-grade reading, where 42% of students are proficient—the school's strongest subject. For parents considering this school, the sudden nature of the decline warrants asking the district about recent changes in leadership, curriculum, or student support services, and what specific interventions are planned to reverse this trend.

Open Quote This past year has not been the best year for Madison mostly due to the new principal Mrs. Lauderman. From my understanding this principal transferred from Williamstown. This principal is no Mrs. Mannix which had been the principal for the five years previous. She isn't approachable and I have never see her when dropping off my children in the mornings or picking them up after school. Mrs. Mannix was always available if needed and loved all of the children. Mrs. Mannix welcomed the students into the school each morning and assisted in their dismissal each afternoon. I have never seen the new principal in the mornings or after school. She must be preparing for another one of her boring reduntant morning lectures for the children in the gym. She has lengthy lectures each morning before sending the children into their classrooms. Yet she can't understand why many of the children are inattentive, fidgeting, and or talking with their peers durng her lectures. I couldn't imagine being a five or six year old and listening each morning about the importance of being a leader, blah blah blah. I'm much older and I have difficulty staying focused during her lectures. She focuses on teaching them her morals and values instead of being most concerned with their education. This principal has been a disgrace to the school. She is absolutely ridiculous and I know there are many other parents that are also very upset. The majority of the teachers are still very good but like any other school some are also bad. The school lack its own good leadership yet that is all this principal has talked about this year! Very very concerning!!! Close Quote
