Vinson Middle School is a small school in Huntington, WV, serving 164 students in grades 6 through 8 as part of the Wayne County Schools district. This school has experienced one of the most dramatic performance shifts in the region, falling from a top-tier 5-star rating just a few years ago to a 2-star rating today.

The most striking pattern at Vinson is the difference between its lower and upper grades. In the most recent school year, 6th graders posted strong math scores (41.2% proficient) that beat both the district and state averages, and 6th and 7th grade English Language Arts scores (58.8% and 60.5%) were actually the highest among all nearby schools, including higher-ranked Barboursville Middle School.
