Summary

Buckhannon Upshur High School is a large public high school in Buckhannon, WV, serving 1,068 students in grades 9 through 12 as the sole high school in the Upshur County Schools district.

For parents, the most important takeaway is that this school has a strong graduation rate—92.3% in 2024-2025, which beats nearby Lewis County High School (87.1%) and Philip Barbour High School Complex (89.4%)—but academic proficiency on state tests is a real concern. In math, only 11.4% of students are proficient, which is the lowest among nearby schools and well below the state average of 20.6%. English Language Arts proficiency is 41.1%, better than Philip Barbour (35.8%) and Lewis County (38.1%) but behind South Harrison High School (49.4%). Science proficiency sits at 17.4%, also trailing most peers. Math has been persistently weak, staying below 15% for four straight years.

One bright spot is a dramatic improvement for students from low socio-economic backgrounds—their statewide ranking jumped from the 6th percentile in 2024-2025 to the 35th percentile in 2025-2026, suggesting recent interventions may be working. However, the school serves female students (37th percentile) notably better than male students (19th percentile). The student-to-teacher ratio of 16.8 is higher than all nearby schools (which range from 13.1 to 14.9), meaning larger class sizes and potentially less individual attention. The contrast with South Harrison High School, just 18 miles away, is stark: South Harrison achieves higher proficiency in every subject, has a 97.8% graduation rate, and spends more per student ($15,853 vs. $11,720). While Buckhannon Upshur's overall state ranking has declined from the 52nd percentile in 2018-2019 to the bottom 20th percentile recently, its graduation rate has stayed stable—suggesting students complete requirements, but academic mastery, especially in math, needs attention.

Open Quote Teachers aren't even teachers. Some cuss in the classroom. Most teachers are just there to fill a spot and don't even teach. The head principal is terrible. Nothing being done about the vaping problem. School lunches look like prison food. Close Quote
