Summary

Lewis County High School in Weston, WV, serves 703 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Lewis County Schools district. The school currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking 91st out of 105 high schools statewide, placing it in the bottom 15% of West Virginia schools.

Academically, Lewis County trails state averages across all subjects. In 11th grade, only 13% of students are proficient in math (vs. 20.6% statewide), 38.1% in English Language Arts (vs. 51.2%), and 13.7% in science (vs. 23.6%). The graduation rate of 87.1% is also below the state average of 92.8% and has declined from 93.2% just two years ago. One of the most striking findings is a significant gender gap: female students rank in the 41st percentile statewide, while male students rank in the 4th percentile—a 37-point disparity that has persisted for several years. Students from low-income backgrounds also struggle, ranking in the 6th percentile. When compared to nearby schools, Gilmer County High School outperforms Lewis County significantly (56.1% ELA proficiency vs. 38.1%), while Buckhannon Upshur High School shows nearly identical performance, suggesting some regional challenges.

There are some encouraging signs. ELA proficiency has improved from 33.8% to 38.1% over the past two years, and the school's overall ranking has stabilized after a sharp decline in 2022-2023. The school spends $11,613 per student—the lowest among comparable schools—and maintains a 14.9:1 student-teacher ratio. While Robert C Byrd High School and South Harrison High School outperform Lewis County in every subject, the school's historical success with specific student populations suggests improvement is possible. Parents should be aware of the academic challenges, particularly for male students, while noting the school's recent stabilization and modest gains in reading.
