Summary

Pleasant View Elementary School is a small K-5 school in Hedgesville, WV, serving 134 students as part of Morgan County Schools, with a favorable student-teacher ratio of 14.7:1.

This school has been on a remarkable upward trajectory. After ranking near the bottom of the state in 2021-2022, Pleasant View climbed to the 46th percentile in 2024-2025—its best showing in nearly a decade—before settling at the 32nd percentile in the most recent testing cycle. The school now outperforms both its district and the state in mathematics, with 45.3% of students proficient compared to 38.9% for Morgan County and 39.4% statewide. Science is another bright spot: 5th graders post a 38.1% proficiency rate, beating both the district (31.3%) and state (34.6%) averages. Perhaps most encouraging, the school has become dramatically more effective at serving economically disadvantaged students, jumping from the 2nd percentile statewide in 2017-2018 to the 54th percentile today.

However, there are significant challenges. The most striking issue is a steep decline in math performance as students move up in grade: 3rd graders hit 59.1% proficiency (competitive with nearby Tomahawk Intermediate School at 67.3% and Warm Springs Intermediate School at 60%), but 5th graders plummet to just 28.6%—far below the district's 48% and well behind those same nearby schools. Reading (ELA) also lags, with only 37.5% proficient versus 49.6% for the district, and just 27.3% of 3rd graders reading at grade level. With such a small student body, year-to-year swings can be dramatic, but the upper-grade math gap and early literacy struggles represent clear areas where targeted support could yield big gains.
