Mount View High School in Welch, WV, serves 521 students in grades 6 through 12 and is part of the McDowell County Schools district, which currently ranks last in the state. The school's overall state ranking places it in the bottom 1-2% of West Virginia high schools, a position it has held consistently for the past decade. However, the data reveals a more complex picture than the overall ranking suggests, with notable strengths in certain areas and grade levels.

One of the most striking findings is the school's unique 6-12 grade structure, which sets it apart from nearby traditional high schools like Westside High School and River View High School. While overall test scores are low, Mount View's middle school students perform relatively well—6th-grade ELA proficiency (44.9%) is close to the state average, and 8th-grade ELA (50%) actually exceeds it. However, this academic strength does not carry through to high school, as 11th-grade proficiency drops dramatically in all subjects, particularly in math (7.9%) and science (10.2%). The school also shows a significant gap between ELA performance (38.9% proficient) and math/science, which sit at roughly one-third of the state average. Additionally, there was a notable improvement in male student performance, jumping from dead last in the state to the 21st percentile in one year.
