Riverside High School

Summary:

Riverside High School is a public high school located in Belle, West Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,220 students. The school is part of the Kanawha County Schools district, which is ranked 25th out of 55 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverside High School faces several challenges, including lower academic performance compared to the district and state. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in the West Virginia Assessment, is consistently lower than the Kanawha County Schools district and the state average. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 12.9% of Riverside High School's 11th-grade students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 28.7% in the district and 21.5% statewide. Additionally, Riverside High School's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 61st out of 113 high schools in 2020-2021 to 86th out of 112 high schools in 2022-2023, placing the school in the bottom half of West Virginia high schools.

Riverside High School's performance also varies significantly across different student groups. While male students have performed better than female students in recent years, the school's performance for African American and disabled students is particularly concerning, ranking in the bottom 15 and bottom 10 high schools in the state, respectively. This suggests that the school may need to address equity and inclusion issues to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed. Interestingly, Riverside High School's academic performance lags behind that of nearby high schools, such as Herbert Hoover High School and George Washington High School, which consistently rank among the top high schools in the state.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers at RHS really care about the students. Student Learning is the main focus at Riverside. My teachers give me great feedback on assignments and the class sizes are small, my largest class has only 20 students. The AP courses are also very rigorous and I feel that I will be well prepared for college this coming Fall. I will miss coming to Riverside everyday! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
