Summary

Madison Elementary in Madison, WV, serves approximately 267 students in grades PK-5 as part of Boone County Schools. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the bottom third of elementary schools statewide, though it operates with a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.6:1 and the lowest per-student spending ($11,332) among nearby schools.

The most remarkable bright spot at Madison Elementary is its work with special education students. The school ranks in the 91st percentile statewide for this group—a 5-star rating that has improved dramatically over the past three years. This suggests the school has developed effective, targeted interventions that could serve as a model for other schools in the region. Another strength is 3rd grade math, where 62.5% of students meet proficiency standards, exceeding both the district (54.2%) and state (54.4%) averages. Overall math performance (43.9%) also outpaces the Boone County district average by nearly 13 percentage points.

However, families should be aware of a significant challenge: math proficiency drops sharply as students advance. While 62.5% of 3rd graders are proficient in math, that number falls to 42.4% in 4th grade and just 23.4% in 5th grade—a 39-point decline that is the steepest among nearby schools. This pattern suggests a cumulative learning gap that parents may want to monitor closely in upper elementary years. By comparison, Sherman Elementary, just 12 miles away in the same district, ranks in the 93rd percentile statewide and outperforms Madison in every subject, demonstrating that high achievement is possible within the district's resource constraints. Madison does outperform its closest neighbor, Brookview Elementary, in both math and reading. Science scores have also nearly doubled over the past two years, showing positive momentum in that subject.

Open Quote MES is located in a quiet neighborhood free from busy traffic and noise. They recently added a section to one end of the school that includes two new class rooms and an additional bathroom. This new addition was much needed to accommodate the increase number of students that are enrolling here. I think people who live in Boone County want their kids to go to MES instead of any other elementary in the county. It's a great school with wonderful teachers who truly care about the kids they teach. My child has been at MES for three years now and we would not consider ever moving him out. His grades have been excellent every year and I feel he is learning at a rapid pace. Keep up the good work MES staff! Close Quote

Open Quote The staff at MES are extremely caring and thoughtful to the children. On rainy days, they meet kids at the bus stop and walk them to the door under an umbrella. They send home weekly newsletters so parents know what to expect all week long. I love that my child is at MES. These are just a few of the ways they go above and beyond. Close Quote
