Summary

Hedgesville Middle School in Hedgesville, WV, serves 776 students in grades 6 through 8 and is part of the Berkeley County Schools district. The school has seen a notable decline in its state ranking over the past year, dropping from the 59th percentile to the 43rd percentile, which now places it in the middle of the pack among its district peers.

The most significant concern for parents is the school's recent performance with students from low socio-economic backgrounds. In just one year, the school's effectiveness with this group plummeted from the 72nd percentile to the 14th percentile—a dramatic shift that suggests recent challenges in supporting these students. There is also a clear gender gap: the school ranks in the 55th percentile for male students but only the 34th percentile for female students. On a more positive note, Hedgesville continues to show strength with its Hispanic students, ranking in the 60th percentile. Academically, English Language Arts is a relative bright spot, with proficiency rates slightly above the district average, while math proficiency (29.2%) trails both the district (34.3%) and state (39.4%) averages.

Compared to nearby schools, Hedgesville outperforms Musselman Middle School (ranked 99th) and Martinsburg North Middle School (140th), but trails Mountain Ridge Middle School (82nd) and Martinsburg South Middle School (90th). Schools in neighboring Jefferson County Schools, such as Shepherdstown Middle School (36th), rank significantly higher. Parents should also note that Hedgesville has the highest student-to-teacher ratio (17.1) and the lowest per-student spending ($10,993) among comparable schools, which may be contributing factors to the recent decline.

Open Quote I went to Hedgesville Middle School for 8th Grade and enjoyed it very much. I had transferred from Saint Josephs School, which I attended for the majority of my schooling career. The transition from private to public school was not difficult. The teachers are so kind and caring compared to that of my other school. The majority of the students were respectful towards me. I must say a very nice school and I'm glad I was able to have attended it.
PS. Team H rocked! Close Quote
