As part of the Racine Unified School District, which is ranked 408 out of 426 districts in the state, Gilmore Fine Arts School has consistently been ranked in the bottom quarter of Wisconsin elementary schools over the past decade, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gilmore Fine Arts School faces significant challenges in terms of academic achievement, with students consistently underperforming compared to the district and state averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 36.23% (3rd grade) to 55.88% (8th grade), compared to 52.14% to 53.97% for the state. In Mathematics, the proficiency rates ranged from 14% (6th grade) to 39.22% (8th grade), compared to 52.58% to 55.53% for the state. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom quarter of Wisconsin elementary schools for White, Multi-racial, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

Gilmore Fine Arts School's challenges extend beyond academics, with high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 17.7% to 38.8% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, the school has experienced dropout rates ranging from 0.8% to 2.8% in recent years, which is concerning for an elementary school. While Gilmore Fine Arts School spends between $13,491 and $15,002 per student, which is higher than the state average, this does not seem to translate into improved academic outcomes, suggesting the need for a comprehensive review of the school's educational program and resource allocation.

Open Quote I was a student there back between 1978 - 1981. They taught us to open our minds and free our creativity. We were taught to problem solve in ways I have yet to see taught in most other public schools. Oh yes. Please note that this school is free of charge. The specialized education we had was free.

I realize this is a historical report and my views may be distorted. A specific memory, for example, was of a project we had for music class in the 5th grade. We were individually assigned to a section of the large junk gamelan occupying half of the music room, to compose an original piece of music. This composition was to be notated using a notation of our own invention. We were not allowed to use the symbols we see in music manuscripts, including: notes, clefs, key signatures, staves, time signatures. Each student invented their own unique written visual communication to convey their musical ideas. We were only 10 years old. I still have my original composition and am impressed with how advanced it was compared to what my young nieces and nephews are doing in present day 2013. Close Quote

Open Quote What a wonderful place to be a child. I believe in educating the whole child and this is what they do at Fine Arts. Children learn to have a voice at this wonderful school. There is a lot of parent involvement there. The student body and families are really a community. We have been very happy with this school. Close Quote
