Indian Mound Middle is a grades 6–8 school serving 534 students in McFarland, Wisconsin, a Dane County community just southeast of Madison. It is one of the state's most consistent performers: 4 stars in every reported year, ranking 138th of 643 middle schools statewide (79th percentile) in 2025–26. That stands out against its own district — McFarland School District ranks 329th of 432 (24th percentile, 1 star). Indian Mound also outranks Oregon Middle, the leading middle school in the much higher-ranked Oregon School District.

Academically, Indian Mound beats its own district in all eight subject-and-grade combinations and tops the state average in every one. Mathematics is the standout: 77.3% of sixth graders and 72.5% of seventh graders scored proficient in math — the highest seventh- and eighth-grade math proficiency of any middle school in the nearby comparison group, ahead of Oregon Middle, Glacial Drumlin School and River Bluff Middle. Chronic absenteeism is 10.2% — far better than the state's 17.3%, but about 3.3 times the district's 3.1%, and up from 8.3% last year. This year's dip from the 84th to the 79th percentile appears to reflect one weaker eighth-grade class rather than a broad decline, since the current sixth and seventh grades improved sharply. Note that McFarland School District's 5.9% dropout rate is well above the state's 1.1%.

The teachers at this school are very difficult to work with. I come to school everyday hoping for something better to come, but every time I come back I just get sucked back into my depression. I am bullied 24/7 everyday and I come home crying. I already have issues at home and I try to tell the guidance office and they just set my problems aside. I hate having to tell all of my friends I'm fine, because I'm not. No one listens to me ever and sadly nothing changes. Bullying is really bad at this school. You can report someone and nothing will be done. The guidance office just sends you back to class because apparently school is more important than your own mental health. Close Quote
