Loyal Elementary is a PK–5 school with 183 students in rural Loyal, Wisconsin, the only elementary in the single-school Loyal School District. It is among the smallest elementaries in its region — only Greenwood Elementary (176 students) and Granton Elementary (132) are comparable in size. It ranks 784th of 1,039 Wisconsin schools (25th percentile, 1 star), well above its district's 10th-percentile ranking, which suggests the elementary is the stronger part of the district. Across ten years its percentile has ranged between 25th and 49th, and the last two years are its lowest on record.

Attendance, class size and spending are Loyal's clearest strengths. Chronic absenteeism is 5.6%, less than a third of Wisconsin's 17.3% rate and below the district's 9.1% — third-best among the nearby schools compared here. At 8.6:1, Loyal has the smallest student–teacher ratio in the group, and its $20,374 per-student spending is the highest of any nearby school, roughly $5,000 above the typical peer. Those advantages have not produced comparable academic results: Nasonville Elementary and Washington Elementary rank far higher while spending considerably less per student, so money and small classes do not appear to be the limiting factor.

Test results divide sharply by grade. Loyal's 3rd graders scored 70.59% proficient in English language arts — tied with Washington Elementary for the best in the comparison group — and 58.82% in math, above the state average. Its 4th graders, by contrast, landed near the bottom of the region in every subject: 32.26% in ELA, 22.58% in math, 50% in social studies and 34.38% in science, closer to the results of Abbotsford Elementary and Colby Elementary. Tracking the same children over time shows the weakness sits mainly with one class; the current 3rd grade is the strongest entering cohort in four years. Whether that group keeps its gains in 4th and 5th grade — or follows earlier classes and slips — is the central question for families. Poverty does not explain the gap: Loyal's 42.6% free/reduced lunch rate is lower than Owen-Withee Elementary's 55.2%, and Owen-Withee ranks higher.
