Viking Middle is a 6th- through 8th-grade school serving 375 students in Woodville, Wisconsin, a small community about 40 minutes east of the Twin Cities, and it is part of the Baldwin-Woodville Area School District. In 2025-26 the school ranked 243rd of 643 Wisconsin middle schools — 62nd percentile, 3 stars — which is above the state median but below its own recent history. The district around it is stronger, ranking 106th of 432 (75th percentile, 4 stars), making the middle school the weaker link in an otherwise high-performing system.

Viking's results depend heavily on grade level. Eighth graders are the bright spot: 73.68% were proficient in English language arts, more than 19 points above the state and the best 8th-grade reading figure among nine nearby middle schools, including higher-ranked New Richmond Middle and Elmwood Middle. Sixth grade is the opposite story, with math proficiency at 45.08%, about 8.5 points below the state. The 2025-26 ranking slide from the 72nd to the 62nd percentile was almost entirely a math and science event — math fell 6 to 12 points per grade and science dropped 10 points while the state held steady or improved, and reading held flat. Within its local peer group, Viking's 62nd percentile sits above only Glenwood City Middle (51st); Menomonie Middle, Ellsworth Middle, Boyceville Middle, Meyer Middle, New Richmond Middle, Spring Valley Middle, and Elmwood Middle all rank higher.

Two areas stand out positively. Viking's work with special education students has landed in the top sixth of the state for three straight years (86th to 90th percentile, 4-5 stars) — the most consistent signal in its profile. Chronic absenteeism also fell sharply, from 27.7% in 2021-22 to 12.5% in 2024-25, well below the state's 17.3%, though still above the roughly 8.7% median of nearby schools, even though Viking has lower poverty (23.47% free/reduced lunch) than most of them. Per-student spending is $14,113, and dropout rates are essentially zero.
