Summary:
Cumberland School District in northwestern Wisconsin operates just one elementary school: Cumberland Elementary, a PK–4 building of about 334 students at 1530 2nd Ave in Cumberland. Because it is the only elementary school in the district, there is nothing to compare it against locally — so the useful comparisons are against the district as a whole and against the state of Wisconsin.
The school had a breakthrough year. After sitting at the 46th percentile of Wisconsin elementary schools in 2023‑24 and the 40th percentile in 2024‑25, Cumberland Elementary jumped to the 69th percentile in 2025‑26, climbing 302 places and earning a third star. In 2024‑25 it was at or below the state proficiency rate in every tested subject; in 2025‑26 it is above the state in all six subject and grade combinations, with an average gain of about 13.6 percentage points. Math improved most, up roughly 17 points in both grades 3 and 4, and grade 4 social studies reached 74.51% proficient. Every measure improved — none slipped.
Two other things stand out for families. Chronic absenteeism is just 3.5%, compared with 17.3% statewide — students are in class consistently. Class sizes are small (10.7 students per teacher) and spending is high ($18,069 per student), even though nearly half of students (49.4%) qualify for free or reduced lunch. The watch items: grade 4 reading has the thinnest margin over the state (+2.99 points), and grade 4 science, while improving sharply, remains the lowest proficiency figure at 58.82%.
