Summary

Sunnyside High School is a large public school serving grades 9–12 in Sunnyside, WA, with 2,122 students, an 82.94% free- or reduced-price lunch rate, and a relatively high student-teacher ratio of 21.6:1. Its size is unusual locally: it enrolls nearly twice as many students as Grandview High School and more than four times as many as Zillah High School, Granger High School, or Mabton Junior Senior High.

Academically, Sunnyside currently ranks 363rd of 396 Washington schools, in the 8th percentile. Mathematics is the most urgent concern: only 6.67% of students were proficient, the lowest reported rate among nearby comprehensive high schools and well below the 43.11% state rate. English Language Arts proficiency was 40.6%, better than Granger High School and Mabton Junior Senior High, but below the state’s 52.81%. Science proficiency was 26.09%, compared with 50.95% statewide. ELA has declined from 53.67% in 2022–23, while math and science have also remained weak or fallen. By comparison, Prosser High School and Zillah High School report substantially stronger results across subjects.

Student outcomes after ninth grade are another important concern. Sunnyside’s 2024–25 graduation rate was 80.2%, below Washington’s 82.6% and lower than nearby schools with reported results, including Prosser at 94.3% and Grandview at 84.3%. Its dropout rate was 11.4%, above the state’s 9.8%, after fluctuating in recent years. Subgroup results also show uneven effectiveness, with particularly low statewide rankings for English Language Learners, students from low-income households, and Hispanic students; these figures point to a need for stronger, targeted support. Per-student spending was $16,635, near the middle of the local comparison, so the central challenge appears to be using available resources effectively through math intervention, attendance and credit-recovery systems, and consistent support for students at risk of not graduating.
