Summary

Home Education Exchange is a small K–8 program in Shoreline, Washington, serving 125 students in a suburban area near Seattle and operating in the same building as Cascade K-8 Community School. Its K–8 grade span and small enrollment distinguish it from many nearby elementary schools that end after fifth or sixth grade. The school is part of the highly rated Shoreline School District, which ranks 16th of 238 Washington districts.

Academically, the school’s strongest areas are English Language Arts and science. In 2025–2026, 80% of students were proficient in ELA, compared with 67.38% in the district and 52.81% statewide. This was the highest reported nearby ELA result, just above Cascade K-8 Community School at 78.52%. Science proficiency was 75.86%, above the district’s 66.49% and the state’s 50.95%; only Cascade performed better among the nearby schools. Mathematics was more mixed: 57.14% were proficient, slightly below the district’s 60.05% but above the state’s 43.11%. The result trailed Cascade K-8 Community School, Lake Forest Park Elementary, and Brookside Elementary, but was close to Ridgecrest Elementary and higher than Echo Lake Elementary School.

The main issue for families to investigate is the sustained decline in math proficiency, from 76.12% in 2022–2023 to 57.14% in 2025–2026. Fifth-grade math was particularly low at 36.84%, while eighth-grade math was stronger at 70%; several other grade-level results were suppressed and should be treated as unknown. The school’s statewide ranking also fell from the 76th percentile in 2024–2025 to the 42nd percentile most recently, although its ELA and science results remain strong. Because only 125 students attend, annual percentages and rankings may be more volatile than those of larger schools. Overall, the school appears to offer a distinctive small K–8 setting with strong ELA and science performance and a clear need to monitor mathematics.
