Summary

James Baldwin Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 262 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the Seattle School District No. 1, notable for its remarkable improvement from a low to a middle-tier state ranking over the past decade.

The school serves a community with significant economic need, yet it performs competitively, with math and science scores above the state average. It receives the highest per-student funding among nearby schools, which may support its small class sizes and positive trajectory. A notable strength is its science program, outperforming even some higher-ranked schools like Sacajawea Elementary School and Viewlands Elementary School. Interestingly, the school shows a unique pattern where male students consistently outperform female students, and academic performance improves in the upper grades.

When compared to schools with similar student demographics, such as Olympic Hills Elementary School and Broadview-Thomson K-8 School, James Baldwin often achieves stronger academic results. However, it trails schools serving more affluent populations, like the nearby Hazel Wolf K-8. The school's journey from a 1-star to a 3-star rating indicates effective changes and a commitment to serving its community well.

Open Quote My daughter goes to Northgate Elementary (starting last year) and I could not be more delighted with her progress. Northgate is a very small and amazingly diverse little community school. There are about 120 families there and 22 home languages! It's my opinion that the poor test scores reflect the particular struggles of students that are new to the country and the language. Kids without those challenges enjoy the same personalized curriculum and tremendous support - and it shows in their success. I am more than satisfied with my kid's above-grade-level school work and I'm over-the-moon about the social skills she's developing. Because Northgate's faculty works so much harder at building community, they have more knowledge to impart. Close Quote
