Summary

Broadview-Thomson K-8 School is a public elementary and middle school in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, serving about 580 students from preschool through 8th grade within the Seattle School District No. 1.

The school serves a community with significant economic need and has experienced a notable drop in its statewide academic ranking recently, placing it significantly lower than many nearby schools. For instance, while Hazel Wolf K-8 and Viewlands Elementary School maintain consistently high rankings, Broadview-Thomson's performance has been more volatile. This is despite the school having a lower student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student than several of these higher-performing neighbors, raising questions about how effectively its resources are being used to support student learning.

Looking at performance across different grades, there are some bright spots, such as 8th-grade science scores exceeding the state average. However, the recent overall decline was sharp, particularly for students from low-income families. Schools with similar demographics in other districts, like Parkwood Elementary in the Shoreline School District, achieve stronger results, suggesting district-level support systems may play a key role. For parents, the data indicates Broadview-Thomson is a school with resources and past potential that is currently facing significant academic challenges requiring urgent attention.

Open Quote We moved from Ballard to Broadview in 2011 with our three daughters. My oldest, now a senior at Ingraham and North Seattle Running Start, chose Broadview Thomson for middle school over Whitman middle school. One year later our middle daughter started kindergarten at BT and two years later our third daughter started kindergarten at BT. WE LOVE Broadview Thompson k-8!!!! Imagine all that a kiddo experiences in a school that has over 40+ languages spoken at home. Every year the school hosts a wonderful multi-cultural celebration with a HUGE potluck from all the families. We have a full-time art and music teacher. The kids get great teaching in technology as well. Our older girls were more advanced for their grade, but the staff is excellent at differentiated learning and met their needs for more challenge.
