Summary

Helen Keller Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 300 students in Kirkland, WA, as part of the highly-regarded Lake Washington School District.

Recent performance data shows the school is on a concerning trajectory, having declined from a 4-star to a 3-star rating over the past few years, now ranking in the 62nd percentile statewide. Its proficiency rates in English, math, and especially science are significantly below the district average. For example, while nearby schools like Peter Kirk Elementary and Carl Sandburg Elementary earn 5-star ratings, Helen Keller's academic results are more comparable to other 3-star schools in the area like Robert Frost Elementary and Woodmoor Elementary in the neighboring Northshore School District.

Notably, the school has the highest per-student spending among the compared local schools, yet produces middle-to-lower outcomes, raising questions about resource efficiency. Performance also varies greatly by grade, with 5th-grade science being a particular weakness. The school faces significant challenges in effectively serving students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, whose performance rankings have dropped sharply. Despite operating in a district with excellent models nearby, Helen Keller Elementary has clear areas for improvement in instructional effectiveness and support programs.

Open Quote School is fine if your child has no special or learning needs. Terrible for our Autistic child, accommodations not given from the 504 plan. PTA wanted to raise money for things that taxes paid for, ridiculous. Way to many activities at night. The playground had nothing for kids in the upper grades. Not enough para support.
