Summary

Hoquiam High School is a public school serving about 410 students in grades 9–12 in Hoquiam, a coastal Grays Harbor community with relatively high student needs. In 2024–25, 67.56% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student-teacher ratio was 17.1:1. The school’s statewide ranking improved to 284th of 396 schools in 2025–26, or the 28th percentile, up from the 16th percentile in 2023–24. Even so, it remains in the lower third of Washington schools and has a one-star rating. The Hoquiam School District ranked 215th of 238 districts, around the 10th percentile statewide.

Graduation is one of the school’s clearest strengths. Hoquiam’s 2024–25 graduation rate was 85.1%, above the statewide 82.6% rate and higher than the district’s 78.8%. However, its 10.6% dropout rate was slightly above the state’s 9.8%, suggesting that many students complete high school successfully while a meaningful group remains at risk of leaving early. Academically, English Language Arts is the strongest tested subject, with 44.76% of students proficient in 2025–26—well above the district’s 30.71%, though below Washington’s 52.81%. Math is the most important area for improvement: 21.36% of students were proficient in 2025–26, less than half the statewide 43.11%, although the result improved from 13.83% the prior year. Compared with nearby schools, Hoquiam generally performs in the middle: its graduation rate exceeds North Beach Senior High School and J M Weatherwax High School, while its math rate is higher than those of North Beach and Ocosta Junior - Senior High. The strongest nearby comparison is Montesano Junior-Senior High, which has notably higher academic and graduation results. Overall, Hoquiam shows encouraging progress, but sustained math gains and a lower dropout rate remain key priorities.
