Summary

Midland Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 399 students in Tacoma, Washington, and is part of the Franklin Pierce School District, an area where the school has shown remarkable recent improvement despite broader challenges.

The school is on a strong upward trajectory, having significantly improved its statewide ranking and now consistently outperforming its district averages in English, math, and science. This is especially true in math, where Midland's scores are competitive with the state average—a notable achievement. The school shows particular strength in its upper grades, with fifth graders performing well, and it has been effective in supporting Hispanic students and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. However, there is a recognized need to strengthen foundational math skills in the third grade.

When compared to nearby schools, Midland stands out. It is a top performer within the Franklin Pierce School District, ranking second only to James Sales Elementary. Impressively, it also competes favorably with schools in the higher-ranked Tacoma School District, outperforming Boze Elementary School and Larchmont Elementary School in math proficiency, despite those schools having higher per-student spending. The key for Midland will be sustaining this positive momentum and addressing specific areas for growth to continue its climb.

Open Quote This school is new and innovative. My daughters get to stay with the teachers that they had in the first grade through the second grade. This is a way to create consistency in their lives. Thumbs up to this school for looking out for the children and the summer packets were very helpful!! Close Quote
