Summary

Sherwood Forest Elementary is a public PK-5 school serving about 325 students in the Federal Way School District, which overall ranks in the lower third of districts in Washington state.

Academically, Sherwood Forest is a stronger performer within its district, with proficiency rates in English, Math, and Science that are higher than most other Federal Way elementary schools, including Mirror Lake Elementary School and Panther Lake Elementary School. However, its scores still lag behind the Washington state average. The school benefits from a very low student-teacher ratio of 13.5-to-1, which is the best among the nearby schools analyzed, suggesting more potential for individual attention. It also spends more per student than most comparison schools.

When looking at schools in the neighboring Tacoma School District, such as Crescent Heights Elementary School, a significant performance gap is evident, with those schools achieving much higher rankings despite similar or lower per-student spending. This points to broader district-level factors influencing results. Within Federal Way, Green Gables Elementary School is a notable peer with comparable demographics and slightly stronger academic outcomes, offering a potential model for success within the same district context.

Open Quote I agree that the classes are large, but I wouldn't say that most of the teachers can't handle it or get angry. I have seen Mrs. Blauser (kindergarten teacher) immediately get the entire classroom's attention just by raising her hand and speaking softly to the students. Mrs. VanDamme can motivate ANY student to succeed no matter what the obstacles. And the school has a wonderful gym teacher and top-notch music instructor. Close Quote

Open Quote Class sizes are much too large. I have seen many teachers become impatient while trying to control so many children. Kindergarten classes in particular are way too large for the attention a child of this age needs. Close Quote
