Summary

Evergreen Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 530 students in Spanaway, Washington, within the Bethel School District, which serves a community with significant economic need.

Academic performance at Evergreen has declined notably in recent years, with current test scores in English and Science below both district and state averages. This is a significant change, as the school was consistently a top performer in the state prior to 2020. An interesting pattern is that while math scores tend to drop in the upper grades, reading scores improve, and the school's science scores lag behind those of higher-performing neighbors. The school maintains a favorable student-to-teacher ratio and its per-student spending is comparable to others in the area, suggesting resources are not the primary challenge.

When compared to other local schools, Evergreen's current performance is lower than several nearby schools in the same district, such as Clover Creek Elementary, Camas Prairie Elementary, and Katherine G. Johnson Elementary School, which serve similar student populations but achieve stronger academic results. This indicates that factors within the school's control, such as curriculum or instructional practices, likely play a key role in its current standing relative to its peers.

Open Quote The parents need to let the teachers teach let the kids ride busses. The parents are what make the school horrible. They need to stay home and let those kids ride the bus they don’t vote for anything with the school the school is now filled with entitlement from the kids and parents. Every years it gets worse and worse. I hate the school. And it’s not because of the teachers. It’s the parents ruining their kids and the school. Let the kids learn to be responsible citizens stop being helicopter parents. Close Quote

Open Quote School of Distinction 2011, 2012, and 2013. Only 1% of Washington states' schools can say they've done that. Evergreen's teachers are getting the very most from their students. Nice job Evergreen! Close Quote

Open Quote This school has great staff that really care about the children's success. It may be in a poor neighborhood but that shouldn't discredit the school by any means. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has attended this school for the past 2 years. I have had issues with one of the teachers not letting him use the bathroom and he also was not allowed to go back to the classroom to get his lunch when he accidentally grabbed the wrong lunch bag, so he had nothing to eat but the breakfast he had before school til 3pm when he got home. He has had many incidences of getting picked on, on the playground, which there have been no adults to stop the bullying. Both years the school, as a whole has failed all state testing. I would definitely recommend another school, if you have that option. Close Quote
