South Bend School District

The South Bend School District includes four schools serving kindergarten through grade 12 in the South Bend area: one elementary school, one high school, and two alternative or online schools. Together, they report 1,102 students, with alternative programs accounting for about half of enrollment. The district ranks near the middle of Washington districts overall, at the 46th percentile, and its results should be understood as a combination of traditional and alternative programs.

Mike Morris Elementary has the strongest overall academic profile among schools with reported results. In 2025–2026, 40.91% of students met standards in English language arts, 40.52% in math, and 50% in science. It improved in all three subjects from the prior year and rose from the 30th to the 41st percentile in school rankings over three years. Math and science are relative strengths, while early-grade ELA remains an area to watch. South Bend High School has the district’s strongest ELA result at 47.54% and made the largest ranking improvement, reaching the 47th percentile. However, math is a significant weakness, especially in 10th grade, where proficiency was 23.53%. Its graduation rate is 76%, below the state rate of 82.6%.

Washington Digital Academy, the largest school with 458 students, reported 45.45% ELA proficiency and 30% math proficiency. Its reported graduation rate of 20.3% and dropout rate of 51.8% indicate serious completion challenges, although alternative-school enrollment patterns can differ from traditional schools. Astravo Online Academy serves 100 students, but its test results are suppressed and therefore unknown, not zero. Across the district, results trail state averages in ELA, math, and science. Parents comparing schools should pay particular attention to math support, graduation and persistence data, and the differences between traditional, alternative, and online learning environments.
