Summary

Daniel Morgan Middle serves 642 students in grades 7–8 in Winchester, VA, as part of Winchester City Public Schools. It is a high-poverty school, with 84.4% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school currently ranks in the 25th percentile of Virginia middle schools (312 out of 416), a notable decline from the 58th percentile it held in 2020–21. Daniel Morgan shares a campus with Daniel Morgan Intermediate, its feeder school for grades 5–6, which has nearly identical poverty demographics.

Despite the overall ranking, Daniel Morgan has clear strengths. Students in advanced coursework perform exceptionally well: Algebra I proficiency has hovered near 100% for several years, and Earth Science has been at 100% for consecutive years. Civics proficiency (70.9%) is close to the state average (74.7%), and chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, dropping from 23.4% in 2022–23 to 13.7% in 2024–25 — now below the state average of 14.8%. However, grade-level proficiency lags significantly behind state averages: 7th-grade reading is 56.8% vs. 73.0% statewide, 8th-grade math is 43.7% vs. 46.9%, and 8th-grade science is 53.5% vs. 64.7%. Since the intermediate school shows similar patterns, these academic challenges appear to be systemic across the feeder pattern rather than unique to the middle school years.

The most instructive comparison is to Signal Knob Middle, which has nearly identical poverty levels (83.8% FRPL) but substantially better outcomes: 7th-grade math proficiency is 74.6% at Signal Knob vs. 47.9% at Daniel Morgan, and 7th-grade reading is 76.1% vs. 56.8%. Signal Knob achieves this with lower per-pupil spending ($10,147 vs. $13,883) and a much lower student-teacher ratio (12.8:1 vs. 22:1). Daniel Morgan's 22:1 ratio is far above every comparable nearby school, which range from 11:1 to 14.5:1, including Johnson-Williams Middle and Skyline Middle. For parents, the key takeaways are that advanced courses are a genuine strength, attendance is improving, but grade-level reading and math need the most attention — and the high student-teacher ratio stands out as a likely obstacle to progress.

Open Quote This is the worst school ever. Don't enroll your child here. The teachers are rude and don't teach anything in their classes. Fights happen a lot at this school and there are a lot of people that judge other people. Close Quote

Open Quote My girls used to love school. Now? They are at the point where they dread school so much they vomit and plead to stay home. It isn't only the students there, but the faculty as well. Most don't want to help the children comprehend what they are learning and if they ask for additional help they are only given what was stated before. No trying to make it work for someone who has learning disabilities. Not to mention that two of my children have Asperger Syndrome and the faculty seem to think that girls cannot have this, it is mostly males. Well so far, me and my two youngest are proof that AS is more common in females than this school likes to think. It took me two years to even get a 504 plan in place for one child, because the faculty seemed to think that the Developmental Pediatrician diagnosis was only a "Recommendation". Yeah, now I know why my kids hate this school, and I don't blame them one bit. Close Quote
