Summary

Indian Lakes Elementary is a PK–5 school in Virginia Beach, VA, serving 516 students as part of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, a strong district ranked in the 78th percentile statewide. Indian Lakes Elementary itself sits in the middle of the pack, ranking 514th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (54th percentile, 3 stars). The school has declined from its pre-pandemic peak—it ranked in the 87th percentile statewide in 2015–2016—but has been recovering from a low of the 41st percentile in 2022–2023. One standout positive: only 6.5% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, less than half the state average (14.8%) and well below the district average (10.1%). Among nearby schools, only Rosemont Forest Elementary is clearly better on attendance.

Academically, Indian Lakes shows a clear upper-grade strength, early-grade weakness pattern. Fifth graders outperform the district and state in every tested subject: 85.9% proficient in math (vs. 77.9% district), 75.6% in science, 80.5% in reading, and 82.9% in VA Studies. That fifth-grade math score is the third highest among 10 nearby elementary schools, trailing only Salem Elementary and Glenwood Elementary. However, 3rd and 4th graders lag well behind district averages—4th grade reading is 12.4 points below the district (68.1% vs. 80.5%), and only Parkway Elementary scores lower locally. The school's spending of about $15,058 per student and favorable 13.1 student-teacher ratio don't explain the gap, since Salem spends less and achieves far stronger results.

Subgroup results are a mix of success stories and concerns. Hispanic students ranked in the 85th percentile statewide, a consistently strong result, while African American students improved dramatically from the 23rd to 58th percentile over three years. However, military-connected students rank in the 22nd percentile statewide—a notable gap given Virginia Beach's large military population—and White students also trail the statewide median for that group. The bigger picture is encouraging: with excellent attendance, strong fifth-grade outcomes, and clear improvement from recent lows, Indian Lakes has a realistic path back toward its historical standing if it can apply its upper-grade success to 3rd and 4th grades.
