Summary

Livingston Elementary is a PK-5 school in Spotsylvania, VA, serving 479 students in a community where about 65% of families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school belongs to Spotsylvania County Public Schools, a district ranked in the bottom third of Virginia districts. Livingston has declined sharply in recent years — from the 56th percentile statewide in 2021-22 to the 9th percentile in 2025-26, ranking 1,010th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools. That makes it the lowest-ranked of every comparable nearby school, including Brock Road Elementary, Courtland Elementary, Courthouse Road Elementary, and Parkside Elementary.

The most striking academic concern is in the upper grades. In 2025-26, just 37% of 5th graders passed the math SOL, compared to 70% across the district and 72% statewide. Only 42% passed 5th grade reading and 45% passed science, while 4th grade Virginia Studies proficiency was just 34% — roughly half the district and state averages. These gaps are far larger than at nearby schools with similar demographics. Early grades are a relative strength: in 2022-23, 3rd graders scored above district and state averages in both math and reading, suggesting that performance drops sharply as students move through the school.

Chronic absenteeism is another concern — at 21.3%, it is the highest of all nearby schools and above both district (19.6%) and state (14.8%) averages. Even Berkeley Elementary, which has a higher poverty rate, reports just 9.4% chronic absenteeism and a much higher state ranking. Livingston spends $10,146 per student, more than most nearby schools, yet outcomes trail many lower-spending schools. One bright spot: Hispanic students placed in the 32nd percentile among Virginia schools serving Hispanic students, the school's strongest subgroup result. Overall, the combination of high absenteeism, declining subgroup effectiveness, and above-average spending points to school-level challenges that go beyond student demographics.

Open Quote My kids are always coming home sick. It says on the front door they are an accredited school, but they are no longer. I used to babysit for two families whom took their kids out because of the poor faculity. If you ever have a complaint for this school in person, they will all laugh when you walk into the door; thinking you are stupid for bringing up the school issues. My son has gotten bullied for two years and not a single person has done anything. I am pulling my kids from this school, myself and three other parents, to homeschool through www.k12.com.
