Summary

Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle is a grades 6–8 magnet school in Roanoke, VA, serving 540 students as part of Roanoke City Public Schools. The school currently ranks 407th out of 416 Virginia middle schools, putting it in the bottom 2% statewide. It is the lowest-ranked of Roanoke City's five middle schools, trailing John P. Fishwick Middle, James Madison Middle, Woodrow Wilson Middle, and Breckinridge Middle. The contrast with nearby suburban schools is dramatic — Cave Spring Middle ranks 13th in the state, Read Mountain Middle ranks 29th, and Hidden Valley Middle ranks 32nd.

Addison spends more per student ($15,906) and has a lower student-teacher ratio (11.2) than any nearby school, yet grade-level academic results are far below state averages. Only 6.4% of 7th graders and 12.5% of 6th and 8th graders are proficient in on-grade-level math, compared with 51–63% statewide. Reading proficiency ranges from 31.8% to 42.5% across grades, roughly 30 points below the state. However, the school shows a striking "two schools in one" pattern: advanced math students excel, with 100% of 8th graders and 96.3% of 7th graders proficient in Algebra I. Geometry is a notable exception, with only 68.2% proficient compared with 97.2% statewide.

One clear bright spot is attendance: chronic absenteeism has fallen from 34.4% in 2021–2022 to 20.5% in 2024–2025, now below the district average. Addison serves a high-poverty student body — about 97% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — similar to other Roanoke City middle schools but well above nearby county schools. Overall, Addison has real resources, small classes, and a strong accelerated math track, but those strengths haven't lifted results for most students. The central challenge — and opportunity — is understanding why advanced math students thrive while the majority struggle, and bringing those successful strategies to the entire school.
