Summary

Virginia Heights Elementary is a small PK-5 school in Roanoke, VA, serving 245 students in the Roanoke City Public Schools district, where virtually every student qualifies for meal assistance. The school ranks in the 29th percentile of Virginia elementary schools with a 1-star rating — above its district's overall 11th-percentile ranking but below the state median. Within its local cluster, Virginia Heights sits academically between higher-performing neighbors like Wasena Elementary and lower-performing ones like Hurt Park Elementary.

The school's clearest strength is 3rd grade performance, which rivals some of the top elementary schools in the area. In 2025-26, 3rd grade math proficiency reached 85% and 3rd grade reading hit 72.5%, both above the state average, with Wasena Elementary actually trailing Virginia Heights in 3rd grade math. The challenge comes in upper elementary: 4th grade math proficiency fell to 53.6%, below the district average, marking a steady decline from 71.1% in 2022-23. Fourth grade Virginia Studies (50%) also trails the district, while 5th grade results sit above the district but below the state. This sharp drop from strong 3rd grade results to weaker 4th grade outcomes is the school's most notable pattern.

Attendance is a quiet strength. Virginia Heights posts a 15.9% chronic absenteeism rate, nearly matching the state average of 14.8% and dramatically better than the Roanoke City district's 25.0%. The school also spends generously — $17,055 per student — with a favorable 10.3 student-teacher ratio. However, higher spending and smaller classes don't automatically translate into higher rankings: Wasena, just 0.7 miles away, spends less per student yet outranks Virginia Heights significantly. For parents, the picture is a school with solid early-grade instruction, strong attendance, and clear room for improvement in upper elementary academics, especially 4th grade math.

Open Quote I thought Virginia Heights would be a good school for my children. Turns out it was all just a show. My children actually did better at a lower ranking school. I feel the teachers at Virginia Heights could put a better effort on teaching students and not "pushing" them through assignments. Better communication between teachers and parents would also be more helpful. Close Quote
