Summary

Huguenot High is a large, open-enrollment high school in Richmond City Public Schools serving 1,469 students in grades 9-12, where nearly 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has had a difficult decade in statewide rankings, placing in the 2nd percentile (323rd out of 331 Virginia high schools) in 2025-26. Despite this, its 78.1% graduation rate actually exceeds the district average of 77.5%, though it falls well short of the Virginia state average of 92.3%. Huguenot also outperforms some of its immediate peers: Richmond High School for the Arts graduates just 56.7% of students, and Richmond Success Academy only 43.5%.

Academically, Huguenot shows an uneven picture. Algebra I is a genuine bright spot—upper-grade students beat state averages, with 100% proficiency among 12th graders and 95.8% among 11th graders, evidence that credit recovery efforts are working well. When compared to nearby schools, Huguenot trails Thomas Jefferson High (94.4% graduation) by a wide margin but is far ahead of the region's lowest performers. The starkest contrast is with the district's selective magnet schools like Open High and Richmond Community High, though those schools serve far smaller, self-selected populations.

Several trends deserve attention. Graduation rates have slipped from 81.1% to 78.1% over the past year, while dropout rates (18.1%) and chronic absenteeism (22.5%) have climbed. Huguenot's per-student spending of $9,662 is well below city peers like John Marshall High ($15,985) and Thomas Jefferson ($14,341), despite serving one of the district's highest-poverty student bodies. For parents, Huguenot is a school with real strengths—particularly in Algebra I recovery and in graduating students who might otherwise drop out—but also one where literacy intervention and early math acceleration are urgently needed.

Come on Huguenot HS. Support your school and show the system what you are made of. Look George Wythe has a 3 star rating, and we know we all know people who go there, but we need to support Huguenot. We are about to get a new look and I say let's bring our A game and step it up with the grading overall for the school in all areas! Band get ready to make this school be known for what sound we make, and "Bring it", and let's make other schools work harder to compete against us in our different sports we are GREAT in, finally let's just do what we do and best... Show them what Trojans are...That's right >>>>>>> WARRIORS in the classroom, in competition whether it's sports or bringing the sound that will, I say, will... Ring throughout Richmond, VA.
