Summary

Tunstall High is a public high school in Dry Fork, VA, serving roughly 800 students in grades 9–12 as part of Pittsylvania County Public Schools. The school earns a 5-star rating and ranks 32nd of 331 Virginia high schools for 2025-2026, placing it in the top 10% statewide — a remarkable climb from 106th place in 2018-2019 and as high as 7th in 2023-2024. Even with nearly 86% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, it is the highest-ranked high school in its immediate area, easily outpacing nearby Dan River High (108th) and Chatham High (106th).

Academically, Tunstall exceeds state averages in nearly every SOL subject. In 2025-2026, 11th graders posted 95% reading proficiency and 92% in writing, while 9th graders hit 95% in geometry and 92% in Algebra I. Biology reached 85% proficiency, well above the state's 69%. The graduation rate has climbed to 96.4%, and the dropout rate has fallen to 2.5% — both better than state averages. The school is especially effective with students facing economic disadvantage, whose outcomes rank 8th of 321 Virginia high schools. African American students rank 20th statewide and Hispanic students rank 22nd, both strong 5-star results. Impressively, Tunstall achieves all this while spending just $8,345 per student — less than nearby Dan River High ($9,968) and Chatham High ($9,213).

The biggest concern is chronic absenteeism. About 20.7% of students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, well above district (14.3%) and state (14.8%) rates. However, this is a regional pattern, as Dan River High (20.7%) and Chatham High (22.2%) face similar challenges. Another area to watch is the disabled student subgroup, which slipped from 11th statewide in 2023-2024 to 122nd in 2025-2026. Overall, Tunstall stands out as a cost-effective, high-performing school that serves its community well. If it can address attendance and strengthen special education supports, it has strong potential to return to the elite top-10 tier it reached in 2023-2024.

Open Quote They do not offer the students many extra curricular activities(other than sports), and communication between the school and the parents is very poor, especially with regard to operation schedules, necessary equipment, etc. Tunstall High School makes no effort to stay up to date with or utilize modern technology, and that is just neglectful to the students. This school also make no effort to let the students know what they need before the new school year begins. Thus causing a mad dash to the store (after the school year has begone)for parents to get the equipment our children need to be successful. The principle of the school is NEVER a warm person, in the least, the only time I have ever seen a smile on her face is when she was yelling at a student for inappropriate attire (not my child), but it was still very unpleasant to witness. However, the reason why I gave this school a positive rating at all is because of it's few very good teachers who do seem to care for the students and do there best to work with the very little they are given.
