Summary

Huntington Middle serves 292 students in grades 6–7 in Newport News, VA, as part of Newport News City Public Schools. The school has ranked in the bottom 1–3% of Virginia middle schools for over a decade, landing at 411 out of 416 schools in the most recent state ranking, and nearly 99% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The most striking issue at Huntington is chronic absenteeism. In the 2024–2025 school year, 38.4% of students were chronically absent — more than double the district rate of 18.5% and well above the state average of 14.8%. This matters because academic proficiency is far below district and state levels: only 18.1% of 7th graders passed the state math SOL test, compared to 51.1% statewide, and 6th grade reading proficiency was 40% versus 73% statewide. The contrast with B.T. Washington Middle, located just 1.24 miles away, is stark. B.T. Washington serves a nearly identical student population yet has just an 8.1% chronic absenteeism rate and posts proficiency rates two to three times higher, such as 87.25% in 6th grade math and 89.26% in 6th grade reading.

Huntington actually spends more per student ($12,208) and has far smaller class sizes (a 7.7 student-teacher ratio) than many higher-performing schools, including Tabb Middle in nearby York County and Francis W. Jones Magnet Middle in Hampton, which serves a similarly high-poverty population yet ranks among the top middle schools in Virginia. This shows resources alone are not the answer. There are small signs of potential: students in advanced Algebra I courses pass at rates above 90%, and chronic absenteeism has improved from a crisis-level 62.6% in 2021–2022. However, for the vast majority of students, improving attendance and core instruction appears to be the most critical path forward.
