Homer L. Hines Middle serves 846 students in grades 6-8 in Newport News, Virginia, as part of Newport News City Public Schools. It is a very high-need school — 97.3% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Historically ranked near the bottom of Virginia middle schools, Hines has shown modest improvement in recent years, reaching the 20th percentile in 2024-25 before slipping to the 12th percentile in 2025-26.

Among the five Newport News middle schools, Hines ranks third, ahead of both Crittenden Middle and Huntington Middle, though behind B.T. Washington Middle and Ethel M. Gildersleeve Middle. The school has genuine strengths in advanced coursework and science, but attendance and grade-level math remain the key challenges.
