Summary

Eastern Montgomery High is a small public high school in Elliston, VA, serving 254 students in grades 9–12 within Montgomery County Public Schools. The school is considerably smaller than every nearby high school, and it serves a high-poverty population: 84.65% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, a rate more than double that of Auburn High (40.97%) and much closer to Roanoke City schools like William Fleming High and Patrick Henry High.

Despite these challenges, Eastern Montgomery has notable strengths. Its graduation rate of 91.6% is nearly identical to the state average, and its dropout rate has fallen sharply from 9.7% in 2020-2021 to just 2.7% in 2024-2025—now below both district and state averages. The school also spends more per student ($16,628) than any comparison school, far surpassing Blacksburg High ($8,757) and Auburn High ($12,984), and it maintains a very low 9.8:1 student-teacher ratio. However, academic results are mixed. Reading proficiency (81.13%) trails the district and state, writing proficiency (67.92%) is notably lower, and the school's overall state ranking recently dropped from the 44th percentile to the 8th percentile—its lowest rank in a decade.

The school's biggest hurdle appears to be attendance, not academics. Chronic absenteeism stands at 28.2%, roughly double the district rate of 13.6% and higher than all Montgomery County peers, including Christiansburg High (25.2%). Encouragingly, low-income students at Eastern Montgomery perform relatively better than the school's overall rank suggests, placing in the 36th percentile statewide for economically disadvantaged students. With such a small enrollment, test scores can swing dramatically from year to year, so rankings should be interpreted cautiously. Overall, Eastern Montgomery is a high-need school that succeeds at keeping students on track to graduation but faces significant challenges in attendance and grade-level proficiency.
