Summary

Smart's Mill Middle in Leesburg, VA serves 885 students in grades 6–8 and is part of Loudoun County Public Schools, a 4-star district — yet the school itself ranks in the bottom half of Virginia middle schools (231st of 416, 2 stars, 44th percentile) for 2025–2026. The biggest concern for parents is grade-level math: only 25.9% of 6th graders scored proficient on the SOL Math test, versus 60.13% across the district and 63.19% statewide. Seventh and eighth grade math proficiency (33.09% and 35.66%) also trail district averages by more than 18 points. Every one of the 10 nearby middle schools outranks Smart's Mill.

The gap with peers is dramatic. Eagle Ridge Middle, the top-performing neighbor, ranks 19th in Virginia (95th percentile) with 81.31% proficiency in 6th grade math. Even Harper Park Middle, the closest comparable school, ranks 189th. What makes this puzzling is that Smart's Mill spends more per student ($20,299) than any nearby school and has a low student-teacher ratio of 11.5 — yet results are the lowest in the group. One bright spot: students in advanced math achieve 100% proficiency in Algebra I and Geometry, while students in standard grade-level math struggle. The school has strong accelerated pathways but hasn't yet lifted achievement for the majority of students.

Outcomes also vary widely across student groups. Multi-racial students rank in the 89th percentile statewide, African American students in the 74th, and White students in the 66th, while Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low-income families rank in the bottom 10th percentile. Encouragingly, chronic absenteeism has fallen from 21.0% in 2022–2023 to 14.0% in 2024–2025, matching the district average (14.1%). And poverty alone doesn't explain the gap: River Bend Middle has a higher free/reduced-price lunch rate (47.05% vs. 37.85%) yet outranks Smart's Mill. The resources and staffing are in place — the challenge now is converting them into consistent learning gains for every student.
