Summary

Algonkian Elementary is a PK-5 school in Sterling, VA, that serves 457 students and is part of Loudoun County Public Schools, one of Virginia's top-ranked districts. The school has a strong reputation in the area, ranking in the 79th percentile of Virginia elementary schools (238th out of 1,111) in the most recent year, after ranking in the 86th and 88th percentiles the two years prior. Despite that modest dip, Algonkian remains one of the top-performing schools in its immediate area, second only to Lowes Island Elementary among nearby schools.

The school's standout results are in math and science. Algonkian posted the highest 5th-grade science proficiency rate of all nearby schools at 87.23%, well above both the district average of 76.6% and the state average of 68.75%. Third-grade math proficiency reached 89.19%, and 5th-grade math came in at 82.98% — significantly higher than several neighboring schools, including Sterling Elementary (53.62%) and Rolling Ridge Elementary (36%). Reading scores in grades 4 and 5 were also strong, with proficiency rates around 85-86%. Chronic absenteeism is low at 10.1%, below both district and state averages, and the school has historically kept attendance rates healthy. The student-teacher ratio of 12.2:1 is similar to Ashburn Elementary and Lowes Island. Algonkian also serves several student groups especially well, with multi-racial students ranking in the top 10% of Virginia elementary schools and disabled students ranking in the 81st percentile.

The one clear weak spot is 4th-grade Virginia Studies, where proficiency dropped to 78.75% — about 8 points below the district average — although prior year scores were stronger, suggesting this may be a cohort effect rather than a lasting trend. The school's broader subgroup rankings also declined somewhat in the most recent year, which is worth monitoring. Still, Algonkian has improved dramatically over the past decade, climbing from the 61st percentile in 2015-2016 to its current strong standing. With excellent science and math results, low absenteeism, and a track record of supporting diverse learners, Algonkian remains an appealing choice for families in the Sterling area.

Open Quote My kids really enjoy this school. The staff always seems to be truly enjoying the time they are spending with the children, and are very helpful. There are frequent opportunities to volunteer, and the teachers stay connected with you. There is always something going on keeping the students excited and their families more involved making it a very warm family friendly environment. In the classroom some of the activities such as spelling tests are done on the computer so that they are specific to your child's level. That means a lot to me that my children are not restricted if they are able to go higher nor are they pushed to much if they have trouble. We are very pleased with this school. Close Quote
