Summary

R.C. Longan Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Richmond, VA, serving 491 students as part of Henrico County Public Schools, a district ranked 90th out of 131 districts in Virginia. Longan's current state ranking is 808th out of 1,111 elementary schools (27th percentile, 1 star), a slight improvement from last year's 900th-place ranking, but still well below the school's pre-2020 performance when it consistently ranked around 400th statewide. The school serves a high-poverty population, with 89.4% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025.

Despite these challenges, Longan has several genuine strengths. The school's standout area is 5th grade math, where 78.4% of students were proficient in 2025–2026—outperforming both the district (70.3%) and the state (72.4%). Chronic absenteeism is consistently below district and state averages, at just 11% compared to 14.1% for the district and 14.8% for the state. The school has also shown remarkable progress for African American students, whose effectiveness ranking jumped from the 40th percentile to the 80th percentile (4 stars) in a single year. Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low-income households have all shown steady year-over-year improvement as well.

However, reading proficiency remains a concern across all grade levels, with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade reading scores all trailing state averages by roughly 4 to 14 percentage points. Fourth grade math is another weak spot, with only 58.2% proficient versus 73.3% statewide. What's most notable is that nearby schools with similar poverty rates—including Three Chopt Elementary (75th percentile), Springfield Park Elementary (62nd percentile), and Maude Trevvett Elementary (53rd percentile)—are achieving much stronger outcomes. Longan also spends more per student ($11,376) than several of these higher-performing peer schools. Overall, Longan's recent improvements, especially in 5th grade math and for historically underserved subgroups, offer a foundation to build on, but closing the reading gap and learning from demographically similar peers will be key to continued progress.

Open Quote Longan is a good school. There is a very diverse population in the school which I feel is great! It allows students of different backgrounds to be able to get to know each other and learn from their peers about different cultures. The teaching staff is great! There has been a huge influx of younger teachers that are finding ways to teach the students in new innovative ways. All three of my children have loved going there and will look back on Longan favorably. Close Quote

Open Quote Do not believe the parent review from October 2017. Two of my children have been through this school and have had nothing but a positive experience with all staff including the principal and office staff.

As a former PTA Board Member, I can personally tell you all the staff are there for the students. I have never had a bad interaction with the principal or office staff. In fact, the office staff go out of their way to help those that speak English as a Second Language. Close Quote

Open Quote Racist, lazy, and incompetent principal. Unprofessional office staff that will talk about people (especially Hispanic) right in front of them. Half decent instructors. Don't expect them to change your child's clothing if they urinate on themselves at the end of the day and if your child is of any other race but white then he or she is automatically deemed bad and treated as so. The WORST school ever just check the testing stats. If you have the option to homeschool do it and avoid this school at any cost. Close Quote
